Chapter 2: Light of the World Day 2

The Name Revealed!!

John 1:3-9 - All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

John 8:12 - Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”

Understanding the name:

The Hebrew scriptures are full of images that link God with light. Pillars of fire, burning lamps, consuming fire, such images are associated with God's nearness or presence.

John's Gospel portrays Jesus the embodiment of the divine light, a light so powerful it cannot be overcome by the darkness of sin and death.

Light of the World appears in the New Testaments three times

Matthew 5:14 - “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

John 8:12 - Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”

John 9:5 - As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Only spoken by Jesus as Himself and once of His disciples, who will reflect His light by their good deeds.

Just as natural light is essential to life on earth, Christ's light is essential to unending life with God. Whomever believes in His light becomes like Him reflecting His brightness by walking in His light, and obeying His commands.

1. Why do you think John’s Gospel uses images of light and darkness to describe Jesus and the world’s response to him? Because He is known as light and we can see in the light and our eyes can be open to view the world in light. Those in the dark are blind and cannot see.

 2. What do the terms “light” and “dark” mean to you? light is the sun and living growing things, darkness is black and empty when you are in true darkness you cannot see.

 3. Have you ever felt you were living through a time of darkness? Describe what it felt like. It felt horrible, like the world was closing in on me and I could not see a way out.

 4. Have you experienced Jesus as light? If so, how? Bringing the medication that I needed for my bipolar was the best and greatest light for me to see Jesus again and want to live.

Father,

Thank You and Praise You for sending Your Light to the world to give us Your way to find forever in You.

I am so thankful for this study and the prayers that Praise and thank You has bloomed in my soul. Thank You Father,

In Jesus Name,

    Amen
