Chapter 4: Bread of Life Day 2

His Name Revealed:

John 6:25-27 - And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?  Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

John 6:48-58 - I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”  The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

Understanding the Name:

Bread was baked fresh every day in the ancient world made of different grains. It was normally shaped like a roll. It was a primary staple and was often used in worship. Bread was a first fruit or peace offering.

The bread of the presence consisting of 12 loaves of unleavened bread symbolized the covenant of God and His people. Displayed in the temple sanctuary next to the most Holy place it served as a constant reminder to the priest and the people that it was God who sustained the 12 tribes of Israel.

Psalm 78:24-25 - Had rained down manna on them to eat and given them of the bread of heaven. Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full.

Bread also played an important role in the feast of the unleavened bread, in fact the bread that was consumed at the last supper as well as the bread that Jesus shared with the two travelers was probably unleavened bread, since both meals were shared in the Passover week.

In Johns Gospel Jesus shared Himself as the Bread of Life,

Studying the Name

1. Jesus knew that bread is one of life’s necessities, so what did he mean by counseling his followers not to work for food that spoils? What are the implications for your life?

 2. Various Christian denominations have interpreted Jesus’ words about eating his flesh and drinking his blood differently. How have these words impacted your own spiritual journey?

 3. Discuss the various ways in which it is possible for a person to “feed on Jesus.”

Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus to be our bread of life, thank You for sustaining us with His life so that we can be full of Him and giving Him the ability to make us great in and through Him alone.

I praise You and worship You as God and King in my heart and soul and beg You to come for us. We want to be with You healthy and whole in our lives in Heaven and the millennium.

In Jesus Name,

    Amen
