Chapter 10: Rabbi, Rabboni, Teacher Day 3
Praying the Name:
Matthew 23:8-12 - But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, vthe Christ, and you are all brethren. 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
Father,
I praise You for sending Jesus to be our Teacher, I praise You that He came so that we would know you and follow You. I thank You for great pastors over the years that we can learn from and soak up the messages that they have given. Thank You most for giving us Your Word that we can learn from and those who teach through books that we can study.
Thank You again for the clear teaching in the scriptures and for making them so available in this nation right now. Soon they will become books of offensive language and will be banned in this life.
Father if there is any disregard for Your teaching in me help me to see it and remove it. I listen and love to listen to the teaching of You and our pastors that You have sent to us. I just do not want to leave the house.
I ask You Father to give me a great hunger for the Word of God and praying. I want a deep relationship with You and a love inside that cannot be measured. Please Father open my heart to You.
I thank You for calling me to be a disciple and giving me the tools to learn from You and become the one that You have called me to be. I love You Father, and thank You too. The things that I have to learn about this life I can only learn from You and I desire to learn and grow in this time.
In Jesus Name,
Amen
But 2,000 years ago, in a place called Palestine, students and Rabbis were very close in fact when a Rabbi took disciples they were linked for life living in his house for several years without paying room and board in exchange for preforming various personal tasks, the idea was to live and breathe the masters teaching to learn not only what he knew but who he was, that they could replicate both his knowledge and his character.
But it was hardly a relationship of equals, hungry for praise some Rabbis demanded that their disciples show them more deference than even a son would show his father. The Rabbis Jesus criticized were far from humble.
Jesus by contrast had not served under anyone, a carpenter from the back water of Galilee, lay down His tools and called twelve not so special disciples. In what was a Rabbi and disciple arrangement, the scribes and Pharisees were offended, and threatened, who did this Jesus think He was and how was He backing up His teaching with signs and wonders, and He did not talk nice about them.
By His words and actions, Jesus challenged the values that shaped their lives and consolidated their power. In fact, He warned His disciples about falling in the pattern of being called Rabbi, He pointed out that they were all brothers, and that He alone was their master and teacher.
Jesus was not discounting the benefits from learning from the examples and teaching of others, But He was warning his disciples against following or becoming self-important teachers who lead others astray from focus in externals.
Our call like the disciples, is centered not on externals not on following laws and regulations, but on following a person, Jesus, that is why faith is such an adventure, we are called to keep moving, growing, learning and becoming, We are lifelong disciples bound to Him in a unique way, serving Him daily and relying on Him to provide our needs just like the Rabbis of old.
